Kami Farahmanpour, Building Technology Consultants
A case history involving non-conventional repairs to a large commercial building curtain wall system will be presented. These nonconventional repairs included retrofi tting the curtain wall system with new custom-extruded external pressure bars and caps to address several issues, correcting displaced mullions, and replacing mechanical louvers integrated into the curtain wall system. The repairs also included overcladding the feature panels between curtain walls sections with a new system that incorporated an air and waterresistive barrier, and a drainage plane. The implementation of the project posed several challenges including staging, lead times for custom extrusions and requirements for mock-ups and working on an occupied offi ce building. During construction, some of the pre-fi nished custom extrusions were found to be inadequately coated, causing
delays in completing the project.

North Dakota State Capitol Exterior Envelope Restoration - 2015FT

Code: 2015FT

The North Dakota State Capitol Exterior Envelope Restoration Project was a unique and challenging project where the majority of the work had to be executed at night within a six month time frame on a high rise structure in a windy region with difficult work scopes 900 miles away. The scope of work on this project was unique because the limestone joints had been previously sealed with a layer of asbestos containing sealant, and a layer of silicone sealant. These joints were to be repointed with mortar requiring the removal of both layers of sealant. The asbestos containing sealant presented challenges from an environmental concern, and the silicone sealant presented challenges for achieving adequate bond between the new mortar and limestone substrate. A careful process had to be followed to achieve successful installation. There were other challenges that had to be dealt with during this project, which will be shared during this presentation, including resetting 700 lb stones, 250 feet up on the building at night.

Code: 2010F
Presenter(s): Marcy Tyler and Fred Kramer - Tremco, Inc.

Learn why air barriers are used and understand the different types of air barrier technologies and why each is used. Understand, also, the importance of compatibility with intersecting materials when installing an air barrier, the types of window/curtain wall connections to the air barrier, proper wall design and why the incorrect design can lead to air and moisture infiltration. Also covered will be the new trends in testing such as ASTM E 2357, E 84, and E 2178. An overview of the Air Barrier Association of America (ABAA) including their influence and requirements when an air barrier is designed into a project will also be discussed.
